Episode 12

The 1980s is often remembered as a dark period in Pakistan’s history as it was then that the country’s culture and diversity came under attack by a new puritanism. Episode 12 looks at the early years of this challenging decade that saw Abida Parveen and Mehdi Hasan at their brilliant best; the revitalisation of the traditional Sindhi Kafi by Muhammad Yousuf and Pahari Geet by Malika Pukhraj; the emergence of innovative young talent such as Nazia and Zoheb Hassan; and a dazzling recording streak by Ajoy Chakrabarty in Pakistan – before he became a star in India.
